Глубина в метрах, при погружении на которую температура недр возрастает на 1 0С. Величина ступени изменяется не только от глубины, но и от основных структур земной коры. Наименьшие значения величины Г.с., в несколько метров, наблюдаются в районах активной вулканической деятельности, а в десятки и даже более сотни метров – на пассивных платформах и щитах. Среднее значение ступени принято в 33 м.
